Private applicators

Individuals who apply restricted-use pesticides to their own land or rented land for the purpose of producing agricultural commodities are classified as private applicators. To become a private applicator, the individual must pass a certification examination administered by the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA). Every three years, private applicators must become recertified by attending MDA-approved recertification training or by re-taking the exam.

Self Study is necessary
To prepare for the certification exam, private applicators should study the Maryland Core Manual. All Maryland exam questions are based on the information contained in this manual. Private applicators can obtain a copy of the Core manual from their county University of Maryland Extension office.

Optional training is also available
University of Maryland Extension offers optional training for persons planning to take the private applicator certification examination. Applicators may choose to attend in any county or on any available date he/she chooses. To register for a session, contact the appropriate county University of Maryland Extension office as listed on the Private Applicator Certification Training schedule. This training is intended to help applicators prepare for the exam, but it is not a substitute for studying the manual.

RE-CERTIFICATION training for private applicators

Attendance at one re-certification session within the last year of your 3-year certification period will qualify you for re-certification. University of Maryland Extension offers Recertification Training Sessions for Private Applicators. To register for these sessions, contact the appropriate county University of Maryland Extension office as listed on the Recertification Training schedule.
